These Movies Could Never Be Made Today
‘Sixteen Candles’ (1984)
While the so-called “Brat Pack” films made by John Hughes are looked back on fondly by those who were teenagers in the 1980s, there’s no way Sixteen Candles could be made today without serious changes. For starters, the film is full of attitudes about sexuality that would stand up to modern sensibilities. However, the biggest change would need to be the complete transformation of the character Long Duk Dong. Despite a game performance from Gedde Watanabe, the Japanese exchange student character might be one of the most insulting Asian stereotypes ever committed to film.
